About Us

The Merrell Spring Challenge is led by Jodie and Nathan Fa'avae ONZM, who have extensive experience in Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Education. They are dedicated to providing meaningful, value-forming, and safe experiences in the outdoors.

In 2006, after completing their positions as Outward Bound instructors, they founded an events company. Both Jodie and Nathan have represented New Zealand in mountain biking, with Nathan achieving success as a professional adventure racer. Their passion for adventure and their desire to inject energy into the New Zealand adventure events calendar led them to embark on a groundbreaking endeavor: organising an all-women's adventure race.

Undeterred by skepticism, Jodie and Nathan believed that this unique concept would strongly resonate with New Zealand women. Anticipating 20-30 teams for the inaugural event, they were astonished when 109 teams entered, exceeding their expectations. Thus, the Spring Challenge officially arrived, capturing the enthusiasm of participants across the country.

To ensure the highest level of professionalism and participant safety, the Spring Challenge boasts a team of highly qualified outdoor instructors and event managers who are experts in their respective fields. With their wealth of experience and commitment to safety, participants can be confident in receiving a professionally delivered event.

With over 17 years in the industry, their events company has successfully organised and delivered more than 100 adventure sporting events in New Zealand and abroad, solidifying their position as the leading provider of such events in the country.

Jodie and Nathan, who reside in Tasman Bay, are also proud parents of three active children. Their dedication to Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Education has shaped their lives and continues to inspire their work in providing unforgettable outdoor experiences.
